Hey guys, been lurking finally asking for help. This is the number 3 cylinder on my 94 300, how bad does it look? Do y'all think a machine shop could save it
or should I start looking for another? Thanks in advance.
Not a bad price, but I'm out of work due to health issues so I'd have to sell my F250 to get that. Decisions decisions. Oh well, I'll let y'all know what happens. Thanks for the replys.
My view is that time is money...and that 4.9 head is a heavy SOB. I would not want to pull a JY one just to view the same chamber cracks you have currently.
And if you find one that is solid, it will need work anyway before I would consider installing on my truck.
Glad the link helped, it has a good rep over on Fordsix.
That's what I was thinking, if it's a common problem then good chance the JY one has cracks too but only thing left to remove was the valve cover and head itself so it might be worth a look. I already took the intake when I broke mine lol
Were there symptoms which caused you to pull the head?
Roy
I bought it as a project with coolant in the oil, tore it down thinking it needed a head gasket to find that.It actually ran surprisingly well I only started it to get it on and off the trailer when I bought it but it still fired right up and had power. I did decide to check out the one at the junkyard, just got home with it it's dirty as all hell but looks solid.
Mine had two cracks in the head. Check the block too. Mine had a pinhole in the cylinder meaning block replacement..
How in the world does that area get a pinhole? Should I be looking at the head side for that too? I've seen cracked and splits never a pinhole though. Curious how that happens.
I'm not sure how the cylinder got a pinhole. All I know is I'm waiting on a new long block.
I knew the truck was maintenance neglected when I bought it last year, but in all my years and cars this is a first. If you can check, since you've got the head off already, it may be beneficial, or not..
Update, head is cleaned up with new valve seals and in place. Next question, half of the new head bolt set has white thread lock on it. How do I know which holes in the head those ones go in?
