'86 6.9, 150k infrequently used. Started in the morning, usual smoky deal. Cleaned the battery terminals with wire brush and baking soda, got some water on the relays etc located on passenger fenderwell. Now it won't turn over. Has good battery charge - but no starter turn.
Checked connections at starter, look OK.
Do starters go out that fast? No warning? Could I have fried a starter relay? Where is it.....
Somebody said to try tapping the starter while someone turns key - haven't done that yet.
Any other suggestions or hints? thanks
The thingy on the pass fenderwall is the starter solenoid. If it is gone bad you can jump around it to see if the starter will crank. Jump across the 2 big terminals on the solenoid --- BE SURE THE TRANSMISSION IS IN NEUTRAL or park. Keep us posted. BE SURE THE TRANSMISSION IS IN NEUTRAL OR PARK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
by the way BE SURE THE TRANS IS IN NEUTRAL OR PARK !!!!!!!!!!
It's an automatic, but thanks for the warning. The only thing that has two big terminals says "don't jump start here", I think it's the glow plug relay. The solenoid is down by the starter, I believe. Anyhow, I decided in my anger to take the gear shift and ring it back and forth from P to 1 a couple times while saying some profanity, and I'll be if it didn't start to crank. Thanks for the reply, though!
