1994 Ranger 4.0. Running along and it will quit for a second then keep running. It will do this several times a day and has done it for several years. No codes. What can be the cause? Thanks.
I had a similar mystery cut out right after the Dealer replaced my then new 99 Ranger 4.0L engine. That puppy would randomly cut off & right back on at a stop light idle, sometimes while cruising, sometimes on acceleration. Then one day I got caught out on the way home in a Louisiana style frog choaking down pour & trying to get up a long slight grade & it wasn't gonna make it. Would only do 40 - 45 Max. Took that puppy back to the Dealer with all that info & Roger their engine Tech, performed a "Wet-Down" test with a spray bottle of water, on the coil-pack, along each plug wire & spark plug external insulator & got the miss to occur on the last plug #6 insulator when it got spritzed. It's external ceramic insulator had a really hard to see micro crack in it, so that made it do ok when it was dry out, but really act out in that heavy downpour & his wet-down test.
SO, you might consider waiting until dark & combine the wet-down test of the ignition secondary high-voltage components individually, while watching for a arcs & sparks light show, listening & feeling for a miss as you squirt each component separately. The coil-pack is known to crack & break down unseen underneath, so if you don't find any problems with it in place, unbolt & block it up with some wood or plastic, so you can see & squirt it underneath while its at a warm idle & let us know what you find.
Sorry, I haven't thought about or done anything to it yet. I have a Kubota tractor that I ran ot of fuel(diesel) and can't get started and that comes first. It's been too cold for me to work on anything and I'm going fishing this afternoon. I have my priorities straight. I'll let you know.
