Advertising $$

As we all probably know advertising is an ever increasing part of our lives. Hershey Chocolate didn't advertise at all for something like a 100 years, but those days are long gone.

So, I started wondering about the cost of all the ads. Google makes a fortune just connecting you to ads, Facebook and Twitter couldn't exist without them, and even FTE has a few.

Somebody has to dream up all of those ads, somebody has to create them, somebody has to distribute them, and somebody has to identify the target audience and gather info on them.

That's a lot of somebodies and there are more every day. While it's nice to be able to find things that you want, I think that the cost of all of this ad stuff far outweighs the benefits.

Think about it, as there are more ads, companies have to do more to make there ads stand out. They could always improve their products () , but I'm guessing that their first worry is that you won't even be able to find their products.

I think that the ads are taking a huge bite out of the economy without contributing even an equal amount. I could be wrong, of course, but that's what I think. I have no solution -- it's just something that I've been thinking about for a while.

Advertising and all its associated jobs etc etc exist as somewhat of a viscous cycle, most manufacturer's not having the faith their products will basically sell themselves as they once might have done. I view ALL advertising as desperate people needing the business or sales they believe it will create otherwise there would be about 98% less of it anywhere.

That is an interesting take on it being an entity costing someone billions of dollars while contributing nothing to the product. It's mind boggling how much money is spent of it though---its like we're living in a world of Darrin Stevens 24/7 in real life!

i was part of a ford falcon site up until it shut down last year.
it was in operation for 22 years. one year longer than google.
no ads, full private owned.
2 years ago google decided that the owner had to pay them for the website to stay operational. he told google i was around longer than you, go have sexual relations with yourself.
google persisted. and Dave continually to them to GFY.
google finally said we had enough and deleted 22 years of information from the internet because he refused to pay their extortion of $1000 per month to keep the site running.

I can't say I've ever bought anything, because it was advertised. All the junk mail that comes in the mail, goes right into the trash can, on my way into the house.
I've never clicked on any ad on line, and never will. Any commercial on tv or the radio, just goes in one ear and out the other.
If I want or need something I will attempt to look at their web site, but more often than not. with in a few seconds of being on any website, I get a pop up to sign upfor this or that. I just leave the site without clicking anything. but the X in the corner.

same here. trash can is right next to mailbox. so any garbage goes directly into it.
and the more you flood me with unwanted garbage, whether it mail, email, or phone calls, the more i tell everyone to NOT deal with you.
there is a news paper company from newark, 55 miles away that is always complaining they don't make any money.
but every wednesday there is a van throwing their "free" advertisements flyers at each house.
i have had them in court 30 or 40 times for littering, and each time they have to pay $100 as a repeat offender....
per offence. and i am not the only one. they get on average 10 complaints per week just in my town.
and each time they have to send a lawyer or person to answer the charge. no plead guilty and pay.
i would be simpler to just stop throwing their garbage rag out the window.

My view on advertising ; The more something is advertised the more likely its a bad product and not worth purchasing . Especially politicians.

an example:
home generators. people say to me genercrap advertises everywhere all day long. they must be good units.
Onan and Kohler never advertise.
my response is:
Onan and Kohler do not need to advertise, their name is their advertisement.
genercrap advertises so much because they hope people do not ask if their junk is any good. they figure that if they spend a 10-15 million a year for advertising they dont sell chineseium junk.

^^^Adding Generac also has 30 minute infomercials running in rotation here locally, all the hype about complete Armageddon if you don't have one of their units. We don't see Onan and Kohler do nothing even remotely similar.

I see Home Depot, Lowe's etc all sell that brand along with offers to have a "professional" install it for you.
