I was told by my local Ford dealer that I needed to have my hubs replaced. Total cost $1100.00. I was wondering if I bought the Warn conversion kit, how hard of a change this would be. Also, would I still use the 4X4 dial on the dash to switch into 4 wheel drive?
i did the swap on my 94 ranger. it is increadably easy. a little tricky at first but do it once and you can do it with your eyes closed. the hub and conversion kit cost no more the 160 bucks or so. i repacked the front bearings and swap in just a couple hours. i dont see were ford is getting 1100 bucks to do to the swap. although it may be completly different on a newer truck. but the newer stlye hubs (1998-up) i thought were a much better design and shouldnt give problems like the pre 1998.
i believe 96 is the same as a 94 if not it should be pretty close. any aftermarket store should have em. i dont know if a place like auto zone will or not but any speacilty shop/off road/aftermarket accesory shop should have em. i wanted the premium but i actually couldn't get them, they werent available for the ranger, atleast not thru the place i got them thru. but do you use them alot off road and such, or just to help ya get around in the winter? the basic ones should be good for anything but hardcore off roading. the other way you might want to go is straight thru ford. i heard your going to pay but that ford manual hubs are well worth it. the reason i went warn was because i had gift certificates that covered well over half the price. a good resorce to look at is https://www.ford-trucks.com they had a whole article on doing the swap and was very informative.
I installed Warn hubs on my 94 several years ago. It's really pretty easy to do and it's just a bolt on affair. In my case, I needed a spanner wrench to lock the nuts used to adjust the wheel bearings but if you're crafty you might be able to get around this. I got mine from Six Robblees in Spokane WA, but you may also want to look on the website for Central 4WD supply.
On the other hand, there are so many Rangers and Explorers in the junkyards nowdays that the cost of a used hub should be pretty reasonable. You may want to look on car-part.com and get a few prices. The downside of the auto hubs is that they seem to be very weak and somewhat quirky which makes Warns look all that much better.
