I have never owned a F250 and have been working on ordering one. Lately I have been considering buying a 6.2 / 6 speed / XL off the lot.
- I do not tow regularly but want the capability
- I keep my trucks for a long time (resale not an issue)
- I am a mechanic and can DIY any customization (stereo, wheels, exhaust, tint etc.)
- I am not familiar with the powertrain reliability for the 6.2 gas, only what I have read
- I like some creature comforts but not a deal breaker.
- I know the 2023 just revealed, but not sure I want to wait a year
I am wondering if there is anything I am going to really regret by not getting a XLT or Lariat, 7.3, or other upgrades?
Any opinions or advice is appreciated. I could afford more truck, but not sure it is necessary.
Thank you in advance!
Ron
6.2 is a nice engine, as well as a straight XL truck. The 6.2 sucks on gas. I average about 10-11 miles per gallon on all 4 of my F250's that I've owned. When I plow in 4x4 I get like 7-8 a gallon. XL is no frills bare bones - but it's a good solid truck. Hope it at least has power windows and cruise? XLT are nice upgrades power equipment group, and chrome grill and etc. Lariat's are bad *** trucks. But to me "in my application how I use it" it's overkill and a waste of money. But that's just me..
My personal opinion is get a bigger engine. I’ve always found that i pour more coal to the smaller engines and wind up getting worse fuel economy. I know, that’s more of an admission of my own lead foot and, as they say, your mileage may vary. LMMV.
The only thing I'll add is the 6.2 is a cammer engine and takes up all the room under the hood. I went with the 7.3 gas for this very reason as there is a ton of room under the hood
the 6.2 is a great foundation and you won't be disappointed with either the 6.2 or the 7.3
You are correct. I am 60 years old, have owned trucks my entire life, my son drives a 2021 F150. But you are so wise that maybe I do not need a truck at all. I knew there would be a couple of you in the bunch, just did not know you would be my first reply.
Thanks for nothing.
Mods please delete if this is how it will go.
Well, you said you were a newbie, so I gave you the answer for a newbie, and then your panties got twisted and hurt your butt. WAAAAAA!!!

Are you able to find one on a lot? How much is the price above MSRP? It would be cheaper to order a new one, but that will take 7 months or so to be delivered.
1. The XLT trim has everything I wanted, nothing I didn't (if optioned right) and didn't cost too much
2. The 7.3 gets slightly better mileage, when adult driven, than the 6.2L/6 speed set up. The 7.3L I truly believe to be a bit more robust and easier to maintain.
3, If optioned the way I want on both trucks, the F-250 was only about $2500 more than the F-150. The F-150 has some nanny features and some engine complexity I didn't want.
I went with the 7.3 in a Lariat trim crew cab. I found my price kept coming in very close to the F150 price with similar equipment. So far in first 2500 miles, I am averaging 15.5 mpg and very happy with the truck. Good luck to the OP.

LOL, I love this reply... good come back. (and he "gave the answer for a newbie"). And what the others have to say in regards to your question...imo , good answers. I have the diesel xlt premium package, but wish I would have ordered the 6.2 back in '17.

I had a 2016 F250 Lariat Ultimate CCSB 4x4 with 6.2L. Loved the truck. Towing wasn't bad unless pulling hills or fighting wind. Definitely gives the tranny a workout with up/downshifting. A lot.
Now with 6.7 Power Stroke, even pulling a 16,500lb 5th wheel, it downshifts less than the 6.2 empty.
I could make a XL with STX package work for me, but the additional things I would want that would push me to a XLT are a nicer, more adjustable driver's seat, fixed center console, and door keypad (can be added to XL with Forscan I think?).
Life is short, get what you want. I got a 2021 250 7.3/10 speed/3.55 platinum. Don't really need it but I wanted it and have no intention of going back to a half ton.
nothing wrong with an XL with the 6.2. I have a 2019 STX crew cab 4wd with the 6.2 and for the most part it's been a good truck, there are some quirks with the 2017+ 6.2 engines but it's still a great choice. Like you OP I have no need for a Super Duty(probably could get by with a Ranger)but wanted a larger truck. My truck will get a touch over 16mpg on long trips if I keep the speed under 70 and for local short distance driving I'm averaging around 15 summer and 13.5 winter. I do wish I would've went with the 4.30 gears since this truck is a little weaker feeling than my 2013 6.2 with the 4.30 gears but if you lock the top two gears out to get the RMS up the power is still there. The 6.2 doesn't really start to come alive until it gets around 3000RPM.
Only reason why I went with the STX over the XL is that I wanted the factory aluminum wheels and that was no longer available with the XL and at the time the rebates they offered for the STX package basically made it a free upgrade.
