My father goes south for the winter, and has a Scamp. He usually tows this with his 2012 F150 with brake controller, but this year will take his 2022 Ranger. He elected to go with the Curt Echo instead of a brake controller wire install, and we could not get the trailer brake to read on the Echo. But, we did get the Echo to work on another trailer, meaning the Scamp brake system was the issue. Cleaned the connectors, then took off a hub.....
What would cause the brake wiring to cut/break like that? Is there more to fixing this than simply fixing the wiring? I was going to attempt to fix the problem before having it dragged 50 miles to the closest RV dealer/shop.
The brakes have probably not worked for a while. I suppose that Scamp is light enough that the F150 had no problems even when the brakes were not functioning, so it is hard to tell when this happened.
You can buy a whole, easy bolt on, new brake assembly mounted, ready to install on etrailer dot com, pretty cheap. replace both sides and be happy, and personally, stay away from a RV shop with mechanical work.
To me it looks like the wires may have gotten “snipped” between two moving parts, like the plates/levers directly behind the magnet end wire ends in the picture, those two parts could have acted like scissors if the wires were improperly routed or got bounced around just right.
I second the thought of buying a set of new bolt on brake assemblies and send Dad out camping.
To me it looks like the wires were kinked around the end of the protective sleeve. Enough motion and vibration and they'd break. Those sleeves need some length to allow for a bend radius.
