underhood insulation

Not poking fun or anything, but for real ... why? I know that a lot of ... or even most ... vehicles have it new, but I have wondered "why" most of my adult years? I don't recall my '77 ever having it, but the original hood did rust badly and by 1989, was replaced with a '79 hood. I've had it tear and then I just ripped it out of a couple. Surely manufacturers have a purpose for it.

On newer vehicles the insulation is held in with plastic retainers. In case of a fire, the retainers melt and the insulation drops onto the engine and suppresses the fire.
I would imagine that in cold climates it would help heat up the engine a little faster as well.
