I checked resistance of all 8 via valve cover connectors and they seem in spec.
Here is issue, cold truck, with 40F temp. Turn on ignion, see GPR engage. If I just wait for the 120 seconds (or whatever the computer calls for that day) truck won't start. Power is going out of GP relay the whole time the PCM calls for it.
Cycle the key on for 20 seconds, off, then on 20 secs again truck fires with blue smoke that cleans up within 15 seconds.
Bad glow plugs? They initially light off and then fail when they start to heat up? 120k on truck, possible they are original GP, on a late 1997 build.
Why glow for 120 sec? I did for 60 sec once when it was 14F out to see if my tired mill would light, it did. Otherwise when 40F I go until the light is out and zip it over.
What batteries do you have in there? OE cables from 1997? Ever cleaned the ends, ground points and at battery as well as starter?
Yes, checked for power at VC connectors. Will do that again. Why glow for long period? I dunno, turn key on, get out, get newspaper off driveway behind truck, get back in, no start. Cycle key, start.
Batteries are 11 months old. Biggest and best Interstate had. OE cables, but grounds good and cranks fast.
Will ohm out GPs again (last done last spring) and check voltage at VC connector again also.
