Newbie here - Tuner issues

Hey 6.7 family!

I bought my 2013 F-250 a few months back.. (have owned several 2nd & 3rd gen Cummins trucks in the past) this truck was “tune deleted?” Has a full 5” exhaust, no dpf, def delete, and egr capped off.. it has a SOTF 5 position switch in the dash, and a SCT box plugged into the OBDII port. Since owning it I’ve installed the S&S DPK and did the Flashark EGR delete. About 2 wks ago the truck went haywire and set about 10 codes off in the MIL system.. after some diag with a powerstroke tech we found out that the SCT box has shorted out and was killing the electronics in the truck.. unplugged it and it runs fine (definitely down on power) but no issues..

everyone says there is a tune installed in the ecm and that I cannot install a new tuner without getting the ecm back to factory..?? Adjusting the 5 position switch will change the power slightly but I’m uneasy about having it and some other kind of tuner loaded into the ecm..

have been doing some research on an H&S Mini Max “race” tuner, so anyone with knowledge on this specific tuner would be great!

any and ALL help will be appreciated!

Most likely the SCT was only being used as a means of monitoring PIDS while driving the truck. The PCM is flashed with a tune file that recognizes the positions of the switch on the dash in order to change power levels. If you are going to change tuning, yes you have to have the original flash for the truck. The dealer can flash the truck back to stock, but you will have to tow it out of there afterwards as it will not run with the emissions removed and factory tuning. Unfortunately for you, you jumped into the deleted and tuned world of diesel trucks at the worst possible time. The EPA is cracking down HARD of diesel tuners nationwide. Nobody stateside has tuning for them or will make tunes for them. As for the H&S, that's probably the WORST tuning anyone has come up with for diesel trucks. Their tuning only does one thing well and that's blowing engine up left and right. Unless your willing to put it all back to factory, your better off leaving it the way it is. The day is coming that deleted trucks will be a thing of the past, and I think it is coming faster than their owners think...

I wish you luck bud, I really do. I feel for you...

These guys that sell their trucks without the flash tuner, with the OEM tune stored on it, and without the emissions equipment removed are just wrong...

If you had all that, you could just return the truck to stock and possibly figure out what's wrong with it if needs diagnosing to find a faulty problem or part. You're in a tough spot without that stuff.

Good luck man...

Well, thankfully in Alabama we dont have the issue of anyone breathing down our necks about deleted trucks, hell 2 of the local officers drive deleted diesels.

as far as the tuning goes, the truck runs just fine as is.. I was just hoping someone would chime in with what the “best” tuner for the 6.7 would be.

You probably have longer in Alabama, but eventually with how the EPA is handling this issue it will reach down there. It is only a matter of time.

I would search up proven tunes or tyrant diesel tunes. Their tunes are clean and I have had no issues with either. I know proven is based out of Canada, I believe you can order directly from them. As to the factory tunes all the guys above are correct you will need it in order to flash the vehicle with a new tuner. If you do buy another sct device they might be able to help
you load a stock tune. About a year ago I wiped the stock tune during a flash. I called sct and they were able to load the stock file on the device thru team viewer while on the phone with them. Then i flashed the vehicle back to stock and re loaded the custom tune. No issues since.

If you do decide to call sct don’t mention anything to them about a custom tune or delete tunes. Tell them it’s for a plug and play tuner from them. Sometimes if you mention delete tunes they wont help since it it illegal.
fyi.

Already put my foot in my mouth there.. lady I was talking to was super nice and answering all the questions I was asking right up until I mentioned “delete” and that’s when she said “sir there’s nothing I can do for you, have a good day” and politely hung the phone up on me lol

Hahaha thats not good. I would look up their tech support line and try again. But you would need to buy a new device, I bought the x4 because i wanted to tune the vehicle and not have to look at the device again. Then i bought a gtx to monitor pids and ended up breaking the screen lucky the stock tune is on the x4. The gtx was also discontinued by sct.

Just saying… Is it just me or does it seem like there have been a few threads/posts in the last few weeks started by people with 1 post count and asking about deletes? With all the recent articles about the EPA cracking down on both, companies doing the deletes, and owners of deleted vehicles, these post sure does seem fishy… or maybe it’s just coincidence. I dunno…

To the OP, I can’t help ya. This is my first diesel, it’s all stock and I have no desire to change it. But if there’s anything I’ve picked up from these forums since I joined last year, it’s that it’s probably not a good idea (for multiple reasons) to pick up any truck that’s deleted. Next to this, it’s pretty important to determine if the truck has been deleted before buying it… and then refer back to the previous lesson… don’t buy a deleted truck!

Sorry I can’t help you, but good luck with your situation… whatever that may be.

If you can, fire up the SCT and look at what is loaded on it, check the marriage on it as well. If it shows as locked, it could very well have the OEM factory tune stored on it. If so, you can download them to your PC as a back up and have SCT repair the device.

Nothing wrong with being paranoid. Is the statement above similary to saying "I lost all my guns in a boating accident?"

not that it matters to me that you think this is a scam post.. it’s a post that’s proven that many people think deletes ruin a truck, when in reality it just makes the 6.7 more like the beloved 7.3.

I have a 2004 Cummins that’s never been altered with 365k mikes on it and the most I’ve ever done was a water pump, and belts/hoses when it hit 300k. Hell it still has the original ball joints and wheel bearings in it 😳

I’ve tried, sadly with no luck.. and the way customer service treated me I don’t want anything to do with them!
