Tie Rod / Rubber Boot

I installed a new drag link and tie rod end... In the below photos you will see the first photo has rubber boot with rivets and appears to be robust, that came as it should in the package and is at the end of the drag link connected to the wheel. The other 2nd photo is the driver side tie rod end, but the boot is entirely different. I looked at the photos online of what SHOULD have been sent, and it SHOULD have been the same one as the other photo. But its not. So my question, does this boot matter ? Should I contact Moog and have them send me the correct boot or just keep what is on there ? Many thanks...

JMO but the 1st photo looks to be a cheap sub supplied part maybe reboxed. The odd boot looks like one in a Dorman help rack. The casting looks weaker also. Again JMO

Thanks all. My question remains, does it matter what boot is on there ? Meaning, if there are different boots on each side, does this matter ?

As long as they don't crack and let water in should be no problem.

They are only there to keep dirt and grime from getting into your bearing. Don’t matter if it’s the right boot just keep it greased and it will be fine

Thanks for the continued help everyone. I got the tie rods and all the linkage installed and took it for alignment. It actually drove straight but my steering wheel was off by about 90 degrees. The alignment place stated they could not do an alignment because there was too much play in the steering and they stated I need a new gearbox. Before I ask how in the heck do I do that job, I will ask a more simple question : How do I get my steering wheel straight for the time being ? I know it doesnt matter and I should just live with it for now, but I cant. Many Thanks.

Take it off and reposition it straight. One nut, two screws and a steering wheel puller will get it done.

Doesnt the wheel only go in a certain way ? Meaning, you cant just pull it off and put it back on at any angle ? I thought the adjustment needed to be done underneath but perhaps I am over complicating / not understanding.

My '77's wheel will clock in any position. The shaft and the wheel hub are splined, no "king spline".

78 and later had the spline that prevent you from clocking the wheel. 77 and earlier, just pull wheel and reposition as suggested.

I suspect that either boot will get the job done which is to keep the crud out and the grease in. Just be sure to grease them regularly.

Do you still have your original drag link? If so compare its length to the new one.
The fact that your steering wheel is 90° changed now means that something in your linkage changed length. Primarily the draglink, but even the tie rod length can make a slight change to the steering wheel too.
But that’s primarily for toe-in adjustment and would normally not change your steering wheel position by that large of an amount. That’s usually a discrepancy in the draglink length.
And no, you really don’t ever want to rotate the steering wheel to its seemingly correct position visually. You want to verify that the steering gearbox is centered when driving straight down the road.
The position of the steering wheel is simply an indication of where the center of the steering box is.
There is an on-center position of the gearbox that helps with road manners. Moving the steering wheel only does make it nicer to drive, not having to look at a crooked wheel, but it also probably puts the box off-center.
So make sure one is correct first, before changing the other.

Thanks for this. I actually kept the wheels on the ground and took the tie rods / drag link off the truck and matched them up to the new ones. No differences. Counted threads, etc. After installing the new, it drives straight down the road. Probably needs an alignment but since I plan on doing the king pins / bushings in the near future, I will wait. Still not sure why the wheel is 90 degrees off when the new parts matched the old.

Also, steering has lots of play ( and had the same play previously to doing tie rods / drag link ) . I have adjusted the screw in the engine bay at the top of the steering box as tight as it will go and it didnt change anything. I assume the only fix for the play is a new steering box ?
