Makes sense if the breaker plate is worn and the stator clearance change is making it die
Those are pretty big wires to break on the stator
Worth a shot tightening up the horseshoe connector if achampagne still has that type
I assume The distributor was checked for wear, maybe time to check it, and the breaker plate again and replace?
I assume a test spare module has been substituted as well?
Oi thanks for the responses @FuzzFace2 I replaced the coil to one that has the studs where you screw on the leads @manicmechanic007 There is no exhaust on the engine, straight headers. How do I go about checking the vacuum? Also why would it be dying from a lack of vacuum? Also, I replaced the distributor cap and rotor too.
Focus on your ignition wiring and circuits. I still haven't seen any mention of what kind of ignition system you have on the truck. This is critical information for a proper diagnosis.
You do not need to worry about plugged exhaust with open headers
The vacuum test was just to check for that (plugged exhaust)
You just put a vacuum gauge on a vacuum tee or tee into the brake booster line to check the vacuum at idle
None of that is your problem IMO
You are saying you can idle the truck for hours, but if you hit the gas it dies?
Put a heat lamp on the module? Replace the stator (pickup coil)
@351Cleveland C4 I’ve poured over the wiring and can not find any broken connections or loose fittings. The distributor is stock I believe, I havent replaced it besides the cap and rotor. The ignition module is duraspark 2. It could be that the module is faulty, but I did swap it for another I module and the same problem occurred. @manicmechanic007 Do you mean heat up the duraspark 2 module and see if the problem still occurs? I moved the module to the interior of the cab for a cleaner engine bay, so the module is a lot cooler in there. I will try to replace the stator in the coming days.
My best advice is get rid of the Duraspark entirely. They were OK when they came out but getting quality components for them now is next to impossible.
I'm a big fan of running a old style points distributor with a pertronix conversion kit. But there is also a way that you can incorporate a GM HEI style module into the Duraspark circuitry and use that.
Yes, The heat lamp thing, we did at the dealer, to keep us from having to drive them around and around, waiting for them to die
The modules would fail if faulty in 10 minutes with a heat lamp on them
You mention your distributor is stock
It's way too old to run around on the original pickup (stator) in it
Have you replaced that?
Consider getting one of these Duraspark breakerless ignition testers, 15-0032 (I bought one recently for 40 bucks on ebay)
@manicmechanic007 I have not replaced the distributor, just the cap and rotor @351Cleveland C4 Do you know of any guides to converting to points or GM?
I also attached A video of me putting the truck into drive. As you can see it dies suddenly
You would not see a broken wire in the distributor as the insulation would cover it.
Remove the vacuum hose to the distributor and plug it and test to see if it dies.
When the plate in the distributor moves with vacuum the wire could break connection.

New stator for the distributor is only about 20 bucks ( a bit difficult to replace)
Just make sure your distributor shaft bushing is tight, or it could be a waste of money
A third option, If you need a new distributor, is a stand-alone unit. Most of the aftermarket ignition companies have something to offer. I run a Pertronix Billet 3 distributor on my 351. Very high quality unit
@FuzzFace2 we removed the vacuum advance and it barely fired up. @351Cleveland C4 I think I am going to go with this distributor. What do you think? Hopefully this fixes my problem. Also it would make wiring simpler which I always love.
That is strange it wouldn't fire up?
What if it was running and you pulled it off say at the carb so not close to fan?
Dose that port have vacuum on it all the time when running?
I wonder if the timing is so far off, retarded, and that is the cause?
But I think it dose have something to do with the distributor if it would not start with vacuum hose removed.
That is a lot of money to find out that may not fix it.
