F250 towing

I am looking at buying a 1994 ford f250 5.8 5sp 4x4 to pull a gooseneck trailer with. I will be pulling a 10k pound tractor roughly 15-20 times a year under a total of 160 miles each trip. I have not yet bought the trailer however it will be a 20 ft dovetail tandem. I guess it should way 4000 to 5000 pounds. So a total load of 13000 to 15000 pounds. Will she be able to do it. I cant afford the gas milage of the 460 or the price of the PSD i hope she will do thanks for your input

Check the GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) of the vehicle. Should be on the driver's side door post decal and possibly in the owner's manual.. I tow a travel trailer with an '89 F250 w/ 460. I understand your gas mileage concerns! Make sure the vehicle will handle the total weight. You'll probably need the 4:10 ratio rear. Overdrive is fine for NON-towing... don't tow in OD. If it's an automatic, make sure you've got an auxilliary cooler. My truck's got the tranny cooler AND an engine oil cooler... cheap insurance. Also.. make sure the trailer's got good brakes and use a good brake controller (Tekonsha makes a nice, inertia operated unit.. I've used it for years... www.tekonsha.com... I belive it's called the "voyager". DM

I do not have the exact figures for a newer F250 but I do have figures for a 1989 F250 with the heavy rear axle:Ford recommends a maximum GCWR of 11,000 lbs with a 5.8 and manual shift with a 3.55 or 4.10 gear. With an automatic you can go up to 13,500 if you have the 4.10 gearing. I figure your total GCWR will be approx. 18,000 lbs. According to my owners guide you would need a 460, automatic and 4.10 gears for a GCWR maximum of 18,500 lbs.

I own a 1990 F250HD 5.8 4X4 5spd w/4.10 gears. The GCWR is 13,000 lb. It's set up for towing it has a granny first gear and O/D 5th. It also has the tow pack. and camper pack. I tow a 5,000 lb boat and trailer combo with it and she really works on the hills. You are correct about the mileage it is good for a truck set up this way but I'd opt for something with a little more torque. That's a lot to ask of a small block gas engine.
Maybe some after market bolt on's will help that's my next route. Good Luck!
