Firewall Cracks

As I was leaning up my firewall I noticed 2cracks where the brake and clutch pedal exit I think.

So you think I can reinforce it a piece of steel steel plate bolted through on one side or a sandwich of plates?

Other suggestions?

That's odd. I would weld up the crack only.

That assumes I have ever welded before and even know how! I can try and find someone but they would have to come to my house. I was hoping I could find another way.

Buy yourself a 110 volt MIG welder if you can, you will use it for a lot of things in the future and be glad you bought it. Watch some you-tube videos, practice on some scrap metal first. Even better, have a welder friend come over and use your new welder and teach you some things about it.

I learned by trial and error until my 15 year-old laid down a near perfect bead on his 1st try. I was happy to pay for full-time welding school when he graduated from high school. I get him to come over and weld up stuff I'm afraid to.

Can't say for 100% but if you drilled a 1/16" hole on the end of the cracks that should stop the cracks from going any further. Not sure what you had bolted in the hole but installing flat washer on both sides with some JB Weld and snugging up a bolt might last you for as long as own it. But like Marten said a tack weld would certainly be the best bet..

Alternatively, grind the paint away, grind out the crack a little more so some JB Weld for metal can be smeared smoothly on inner and outer sides. Grind it smooth after it sets.

Thanks. I will drill those holes if I don’t weld it. It is a flex point in the firewall and I can’t quite remember how the clutch and brake go through. I guess I will try and find someone to weld it. I don’t have the space for more equipment right now although I would love to learn how to weld.

Your clutch and brake pedal go through the floor where the triangular plates are. Someone drilled that hole there for some reason, is not a factory hole..

Excellent, then Drilling a small hole at each end of the crack and regular JB Weld it is. I will put plugs in the holes.

Seems weird the would both crack there without any stress points in the area.

I had cracks like that in my inner fender. I ground it clean then shaped a patch to cover the crack with about an inch overlap, and used 3m panel bond adhesive to glue it on. I’ve driven maybe 2000 miles since then and it’s holding up.

Panel bond adhesive! Genius. They basically glue cars today together with that stuff. Will probably never come apart. Will fashion a plate, panel bond it and rivet into place.

or just drill the 2 holes to keep the crack from spreading and JB weld it.

Will update when I sort it out. Great recommendations everyone!

No need for rivets, just glue and clamp. And yes, drill holes at the end of the crack first.

I don’t think I can clamp it given the location. There is nowhere for a clamp to reach around given it is large panel. The next best thing I could come up with was riveting it or screwing it in place.

thete may be some kind of special tool or clamp or macgyver way to do it I don’t know. There is always something new to learn here!

Use a stick, think 1x2 or 1x2, cut to length to so that it pushes your plate against the firewall and is propped against something inside the cab. Plate it from the inside, don't want the plate visible under the hood.
