My truck is a 223 converted to 12volts about 8 years ago, I've been having carb issues and while working on it last night it developed an issue where the started spins but does not kick in. Is there anything to lubricate on a starter? I've looked in a few places on line and cant find anything. I've had the truck over 15 years, the started was on it when I got it and originally was 6 volt. Its never done this before. I didnt have any free time today but hope to get out there tomorrow to look into things.
The Bendix drive is either stuck or developed a defect. You can try percussive maintenance (smack it with a hammer) to encourage the Bendix to free itself. More properly, remove the starter and inspect the Bendix and ring gear. As for lubrication, it is not necessary unless it is noted that the drive is rusted, sticky, or exceedingly dry, or been degreased. Some swear by lithium, others silicone.
thanks for the replies I'll be out there first thing in the morning. The 56 is just the year I was born. The engine is a 62-64 best I can tell. I think I have a spare starter but its been out in the barn for 15 years and then before that was in the PO's garage for who know!!
got the truck up in the air and tried to figure out whats going on with the starter. I hooked my jump box up to the starter so I could be under the truck to see whats going on. The starter spins quickly but the Bendix never goes in. Looking in the shop manual it shows a roll pin where mine has a cotter pin holding the assembly in place. I guess its been this way for 25 years since I've had the truck 15 and it sat for 10+ before I got it. I removed the cotter and got the assembly out on the bench. I noticed a hole in the rod and one of the pictures shows where I put an ice pin thru it. This not where the cotter was holding things in place, should it have been? Seems crazy since its never happened before. I've sprayed with brake clean to degrease, I looked up in side the where the bendix was and the flywheel looks ok. I did notice the screw type threads on the bendix look a little rough in places. I thought I had a old spare Starter but find out I have about 4 old Generators including a Flathead style. If anyone needs an old Generator let me know since I have a GM 12 volt Alternator.
Ideas are appreciated on how to proceed.
I'm going on Youtube to search for answers.
I'd like to add LUBRIPLATE, MIL SPEC, spec for m14 in damp conditions. Best Long Term grease you can buy/ and rely on. One tube, lasts a long, long time.
