I had just finished changing the spark plugs/wires/cap and rotor. Took a test ride and all was ok. Punched the accelerator once and then slowed down, accelerator then got stuck WIDE OPEN, I shifted into N then P and it went back to normal. This happened once before when the truck was about 1 Year old. I had it in cruise control and exited the interstate, hit the brake pedal to stop cruise, then engine started racing, pedal to the metal, both feet on the brake to slow down, then into N then P then off. Was told "a wire was hanging down and caused it to run wide open" ?? it never happened again until last night. It's a little bit scary. should this happen on the Interstate at 80 MPH. Any ideas what might have caused this??
If you are a little knowledgeable about the underhood of your truck,I would remove the plastic cover around the throttle body{if one exists}to examine the throttle cable and cruise cables. There may even be a detent cable for the transmission also.Looking at the ends of the cables, examine for strands that have broken away from the core. Some cables have a tube that slides with the direction of the cable travel that tend to break and get caught up on nearby objects.Of coarse, anything that is "hanging" near this area needs to be secured away from the cables as well as the levers that are attached to the throttle body.Close examination and diagnosis will find the problem.

My wife owned a 90 T-Bird that had the exact same problem. Only her idea of stopping was to throw the transmission into P while coming off the through way at 70MPH. Anyway we live just outside of Buffalo NY, the rust belt, and I found that dirt and road salt had caked onto the throttle cable and when you accelerated the cable would go into the cover and get stuck because the cable with all the junk on it was thicker than normal. Cleaning and lubricating the cable was all I had to do, Oh yeh, and change some burnt tranny fluid.
