04 Psd

Need some input from all you guys on here. I've been reading here for about a week now so I'm kinda new. I just ordered a bigger horse trailer. Then I find out my 3/4 PSD will be overloaded on the rear axle with the new trailer hooked up. So I figure I will trade my truck (an '02) even up for an '02 PSD dually. Well, I have a brother-in-law who is a salesman at a Ford dealership who can put me in an '04 PSD dually for what I can get a used '02 for elsewhere. My question is, is it safe to say that if the truck is a model year '04, the engine is also an '04? Is it possible that an '03 engine could be in an early model '04 truck? Also, I haven't seen a lot on here about the '04 PSD. I assuming Ford ironed out all the superficial problems with the '03's. Can I tell from the VIN exactly when the truck was built? I was kinda hessitant about the new engine. The talk on the street was give it a couple years to work out the bugs. After reading what you guys have to say, I'm kinda anxious. Thanks for any help.

If it's a 2004 then it's at least got an '03 engine with all the major bugs out. We have an '04 with '03 engine and am very happy with it pulling our trailer.

Just look at the manufacture date on the sticker located on the driver's side door pillar. If it's built in October or later it will have the '04 PSD. If it's a September date it could have either, but will likely be an '03 motor.

I have an 04 with the 03 engine. The build date is July 03.

If you look on the passenger side valve cover (you will need something to stand on) there is a sticker that will tell you the year model engine. Mine says 2003 model.

here is what it looks like
