Ive been thinking lately....later on maybe with in the next year or two im going to be making a lot of changes to my 91 F150. One thing being a new motor. Ive decided i want to go with a 460....but, id also like it to be an older carbed 460. What i was wondering, do you think it'd be possible to get an old carbed motor like that to pass the emissions testing here in Ohio? Id still run cats and all. But also if i found myself one to rebuild, id rather rebuild it for some bigger hp and torque numbers. Is this going to affect it a lot..? Also...what would be the most ideal tranny to hook it up to, C6? Its probably still going to be more of a dialy driver also. I mainly want to add this to my truck as in the future im also going to be running 1 ton axles and probably around 38" tires on it so i want some power Sorry if i kind of sound dumb on these things....im still learning about all this stuff But i appreciate any help, so thanks!
I don't know about all the emissions laws in Ohio but you might hit a few snags. First, you said you had a 91 F150. The last year of the carbed 460 was 87, whatever you have in your 91 has EFI right? Most states allow engine swaps or component swaps only if what you're putting in was an option for your vehicle. But if that isn't an issue where you live a 460 can absolutely be built up and still pass the sniffer. As far as trannys, the ZF 5 spd is great.
Finally, thanks for a reply! I was thinking about it and they do require to be same type i mean as in efi in my case or year motor im guessing. But theyd never know as they never look under the hood. All they do here is the actual smog check and just a visual check to make sure you have a catilytic converter. I guess maybe i will stick to a efi 460, but it just seems its going to be a lot more expensive to get than an older one. I really would love to stick a 460 in there though.....im imagining its going to be a lot of work. Id still like to get a better cam and other misc. performance parts if i can. I like my 302, but it just doesnt seem enough to me.
You might think about a 351w. It's the same basic design as your 302 but with a longer stroke and taller deck height. There are a lot of power options with either small block, it's just that with the 351 you get the extra cubes without having the expense of a stroker. There are a lot of good 351w posts on this site if you're curious.
