Is oil sweating out the diff cover at resting level? I suppose better than all around. The level was a touch low but as clean as new. We got the van at 170K miles from a fleet owner.
To my eye that leakage is indeed coming from the differential cover---it doesn't appear to be from the axle housing tubes. I'd remove the cover, thoroughly clean the gasket surfaces and use either a "heavy" dose of RTV or a LubeLocker gasket which should stop that small leak.
Do make sure the differential cover is completely flat around its edge to further assure a good seal.
That is coming from then tube
There is a big rubber seal in there and some axles use silicone
The plug weld is the leak
You clean all that grease off spotless, and seal it externally with clear silicone in those plug holes
Good luck
There is a TSB on this
Do you mean those round things at axle level on either side of the pumpkin case outboard of the diff cover? I’d be tempted to tap in a freeze plug or force a threaded plug into those holes if it’ll slow the leak.
Yes, It is common for those to leak a little
The Ford bulletin had us clean it all off and wipe clear silicone sealer around in there
They figured the welds were porous
