Trying to fix a buddy's truck, but at least his lamp assembly is still in alright shape. Does anyone have a decent un-melted third brake/cargo light harness with all sockets and connector in usable condition? I don't see this style of bulb socket available. The only option seems to be the junkyard and those are all actual junk. Once fixed it will definitely be swapped to LEDs to avoid future damage.
Mine melted also, the the point where it ballooned out around the bulb so I couldn't get it out without a fight. I ordered and installed a LED 3rd brake light/courtesy light assembly. Works perfect with no problems.
I've broken several of these attempting to remove them. They basically riveted themselves in place. It seems all of these trucks have melted third brake lights. I remember seeing these melted when the trucks were only about 5 years old.
Those LED third brake lights may be and option, but are all hideous and look completely out of place on a stock truck. I had one as a temporary fix a few years ago and it was crap. I was impressed with the brightness of this one LMC used to sell at first, but still didn't like the modern look. It got water inside in only a few months. So, its just garbage.
And those ones commonly found on Ebay and Amazon have only 5 or 6 LEDs in the brake light and since the lens is clear it just looks like the side of dice and cheapens the look of the truck.. Maybe if they made one with a fluted to frosted lens that appeared similar to OEM I might consider it. Additionally, I hate the cold 6000k color LED cargo lights. I have converted my truck to all LED except the headlights, but used warm white ones for interior and cargo lights.
Having those inexpensive LED ones is better than nothing I guess though.
