So, after a busy couple of months, tinkering on this a little bit at a time, I finally got fed up and took it to a mechanic. Diagnosis is that 6 of 8 fuel injectors are just open - dumping fuel into the cylinders. That would explain how it's running, and the gas-smelling smoke. But how did they all die at the same time? That sounds to me like an electric, or possibly computer problem.
The estimate to replace the injectors was $1700+. Seems like a lot to spend on an old truck, and not know for sure if it's going to fix the problem. Now, I can get a set of injectors for less that 200 bucks. Question is, will they be OK to put in there? IF they would fix the problem, I could then consider replacing with something more expensive (higher quality - ?).
Even if I need to replace the computer, that seems like a less expensive item, and could be done along with the cheaper injectors.
Just spitballing here...any thoughts?
Thanks.
