Hello! I’m new here and new to working on a Ford. I bought a 95 F-150 5.8 351 recently and I’m catching it up on maintenance.
I’m (foolishly?) trying to change the spark plugs. I have all but 3 and 4 changed. Watched several videos, and I don’t see these two hoses/lines (they’re rigid plastic) Yellow circles the hoses; red is the clamp. Not the best photo of the clamp. This is taken from the passenger side looking toward the driver side.
in any videos or photos I can find. The clamps aren’t familiar—they’re shaped kind of like a diamond ring; I can’t squeeze them open.
I’ve looked at diagrams and don’t see them there either. Any help with ID, how to get them out of the way, and/or how to access plugs 3 and 4 with these in the way would be much appreciated!
Those look like your AIR INJECTION REACTION hoses. They should start at an air pump on the belt drive of the engine and end at the exhaust manifolds. It's part of the smog system to help burn unburnt fuel in the exhaust. The clamps are not removable without destroying them. A special pliers tool is used to install them and they're deformed to squeeze the tube and make a good seal.

Agree with air injection system. Do you have a swivel/ universal joint? Different length extensions? I have never had a problem removing the plugs on the passenger side. The hardest plug to get to is #8 because it is angled back at the firewall plus you need to work around the master cylinder and booster.
Thank you! That’s definitely what they are. They don’t seem to be removable, so I’m glad I didn’t try too hard to remove them.
Yes, I had extensions, but I didn’t know the joints existed until I’d already done 5-8. Going to get a better spark plug socket, too—mine doesn’t hold them in too well.
Being a newbie is tricky sometimes bc I don’t know what I don’t know, like that particular tools exist to begin with. I have the manual (and obviously the internet) but often the most basic knowledge is assumed. I was prepared for it to be tricky, but it was getting ridiculous.
A short piece of 3/8 hose, is useful to starting the plug back in the hole, and if its going cross thread the plug will slip in the hose, and not let it keep going, and helps reaching the back 2 plugs on each side.

Smart! Especially to catch cross-threading. I will try this; thank you.
