My 97 f150 with a 4.6 has developed a bad oil leak, but i can't tell where its coming from. There is small tube that comes down on passenger side of the engine near where the tranny and engine split that looks like it could be one of the possiblites for the loss of oil. what is this tube for. the other possiblity looks like a blown head gasket. Has the 4.6 been known to have head gasket problems or this just an isolated case. The truck only has 40,000 miles on it. Any info would be appreciated.
I would say head gasket, but you might want to take it to a shop to get it up in the air to see if you can tell for sure before doing any repairs.

Took mine in for some warranty work done on the ABS, and they told me about an oil leak on the passenger side. Turns out the head was warped, and there was a TSB on warped heads for the 4.6L. Luckily for me, I have the ESP warranty. He said if I didn;t have the warranty, I would have to pay out of pocket. That sounds shady...a TSB on warped heads and it's not covered? Anyway, I'm waiting for my truck to be done today.
Ford supplies us with tsb's and ssm's whenever there is a more common problem but unless it gets changed into a recall it is only covered by bumper to bumper or extended warranty like your esp this is one case where it paid to have it.
