Directing the A/C

Something recently happened to my 2000 F350 such that the A/C works but will only blow through the windshield vents. Is there a “simple fix” or does the dash have to be pulled?

You lost vacuum to the HVAC system.

Insufficient details available to be more specific.

I would start by checking for a vacuum connection that may have came apart under and behind the glovebox, and (if you have a diesel) checking to see if the vacuum pump is running (it will make a humming noise when key is on). If you have a 4WD, the 4WD solenoid can also leak causing issues. Both the vacuum pump and 4WD solenoid are on the RH side. Even if the pump is running, it may not be creating suction. Pull the hose off it and stick your finger over it to see if it is creating vacuum.

With a gas engine, I believe they just use intake vacuum, but maybe they just run a vacuum pump too.

Thanks!

We are on a road trip in the west, so having the A/C blowing against the windshield was a bit of a pain. I stopped at a Ford dealer and was told it would be a 2 day job and that they had to pull the dash to do the job!

Came here, you guys put me on the path. I went to a local mechanic who diagnosed the problem. It was, as you suggested, a vacuum problem. A quick trip to the auto parts store and about a half hour later I had installed a replacement vacuum pump, and it’s working normally.

The result: $120 and half an hour vs unknown $$$$$ and 2 days.

Thank you very much everyone.
