Starter installation

I have a 1949 f1, with a flat head six. I was wondering how you all install your starters without having such a hard time. My starter opens up on me and then it weighs a ton and hard to lift. It’s a pain I e done it several times but there’s got to be an easier way. I’d like to hear you alls idea

I've always done it the hard way, but your post got me thinking....

How about this? Assemble the starter on the bench, and put nuts on the long thru-bolts. Then add duct tape on the joints to keep things together when you remove the nuts and lift it in place. Once it's bolted in you can remove the tape. I don't think I'd wrap tape all the way around, but 3/4 of the circumference should do it. Just leave it bare next to the oil pan.
I think I may try this next time.

It's late, I'm tired so feel free to shoot this down if it's a dumb idea.

I actually already use tape aswell it’s a little easier but still annoying. I had to remove it because it was loose turns out both my screws were stripped, might be because it was heavy and I didn’t install it perfectly straight. Now I’m searching for just the bolts!!!

On the V8's, there is a bracket that goes from one of the starter bolts to a bolt on the oil pan, to support the weight of the starter. Does your 6 have that?

I know this is unrelated since it's a Yblock but I had a heck of a time putting the starter back in my 55 F350. It seems the gravity of the earth is changing and making the starters heavier. I have put the starter in my 54 F100 several times years ago with no problem. Or maybe I had further to lift the starter in the F350.

I checked and the 226 uses the same bracket as the V8's, p/n 1A-11140-A.

Don't feel bad - it's left off/missing from many of our trucks.
My 12V converted 48 does better with the bracket in place. Guess how I know that.....

Any of you all have problems with your starter bolts getting loose. I used lock tight on them the last time I installed the starter about a year ago and here I am today with loose bolts and because it was loose it shorted out, is anyone having this problem or is it just me.

Do you have lock washers, I can’t remember if they are standard lock or an external tooth lock. I think I used standard locks. Pretty sure they are 7/16” size.

Which engine do you have? If a 48-52, do you have the starter support to the oil pan?

I have the flat 6, 226ci I think I tried external locking washers but I had to remove them because it would not allow the bolts to tighten up

To keep these starters from coming apart put a shim (like a 3/8" nut) under the head of one of the bolts that go thru the starter into the cover plate. This lets you keep the starter from coming apart as you try to maneuver it into place as the bolt threads into the rear plate of the starter and keeps it together. When you get the starter in place snug up the other bolt first, loosen the first bolt and remove the "shim" from under the head and then tighten it up. Super simple if you think about it and a PIA if you do not.
