Something other than the temperature sender is triggering a hot scenario which puts the engine into "limp mode". Shutting down and restarting resets the hot scenario.
What do you mean exactly by "reads hot"? Do you have an actual temperature gauge with numbers or just going by the gauge in the dash?
Alternately using an IR thermometer pointed at the thermostat housing with engine running ASAP when the limp mode is triggered would work. So would having a scanner connected to the OBD-ll port with a "view data" function when trailering to monitor the coolant temperature would work as well.
I am guessing that the temperature sensor is not accurate. It is telling me that the temp is good, until that moment that it triggers the limp mode. Also, I am pretty sure that the fan clutch is weak, and cools enough when not towing, but not enough when towing on a hill. I have ordered a new temp sensor from Ford, as well as a fan clutch. We'll see if that solves the problem.
