My Front U-joint is shot where the left axle is connected to the stub shaft for the left wheel. How hard is this going to be to fix?? And while I am at it should I go ahead and replace the two U-joints on the right side also??? Am I going to need any special tools and about how long will this take and do you have any words of winsdom to help me out????
Thanks!
I decided not to tackle this one myself. I called my local mechanic and his price was $65 per side, does this sound like a good price??(too cheap-too high?)
Thanks for any input!
I would say that's a pretty cheap price for that. It involves tearing it apart to the knuckle, which is quite a bit of work. You could do it yourself, but you'd probably end up having to pay someone to press in new u-joints for you, unless you have a u-joint press.
I'd say take him up on that before he changes his mind. If you're anywhere close to needing ball joints, now is the time to get those changed out as well.
I was a little concerned that it seemed so cheap. I thought maybe I told him the wrong thing but I told him left and right axle shaft U-joints(front). One thing is I am buying the new U-joints myself all he has to do is install them(if that makes a difference). I plan on waiting while he does this, he says it will take a couple hours total and if he comes up with something else that needs fixed then I can decide what's within budget. To give you an idea of his prices I had him do my Valve cover gaskets and also replace spark plugs and it ran me $36 for parts and $200 for labor + tax. I also had him replace my gas tank and that ran me $216 for parts and $104 for labor.
you dont need a u joint press just a vise some sockets that just fit inside the driveshaft yoke a big hammer and ocasionally a torch
did all three ujoints an all three seals my self this summer with no special tools and im only 17
the inner passenger side is the worst because you have to pull the whole housing to get the shaft out
if you do it your self dont be afraid to spend the $4 on the gasket that seals the housing to the axle
other wise you get quite pissed when you have to tear it apart and do it all over again
$65 is a deal! I have had UJs were even my impact gun and ball joint press would not remove them and I had to bring it to a racing shop with a 40 ton press. Most of the time you can remove them yourself, sometimes it takes a real press.
The fastest I have ever R&R a front left driveshaft/uj on a Ford (my BII) is 70 minutes. That is on the jack to off the jack.
