About 35 years ago, I built a 71 Lincoln 460 and put it in my 69 F250. This week I pulled the water pump due to a leak and found NO backing plate on the aluminum cover. The cover is full of debris and it is badly eroded. (See pic.)
Is this because I didn't install the backing plate? The truck has been running fine all these years but there were times of storage in the Arizona desert.
This is after I scraped out most of the debris. The actual leak is from the eroded section on the left. I thought it was the water pump.
