Hey FTE. Post #1 happening here.
I'm a proud new owner of an '86 F250 that is safely tucked in my garage as of this morning...no kidding. FTE has been a great resource for info as i was shopping and buying this beauty.
On that note, does anyone know what this bracket on the right rear of the bed is? I first thought it was a spare tire holder but the spare is tucked underneath. As you can see, it's secured with rivets. Unless it's extremely useful, i'd plan to take it off bc i'd think it would just get in the way. Thanks in advance for any insights. Cheers.
I think that bracket was added by a PO for something other than a spare holder as it's too close to the tail gate. If it's of no use to you by all means remove it.
It could be that the hinge bushings are shot and the tailgate was rattling and this was his redneck fix.
We can only hope that bracket was helping the guy make a living because it looks like what my ace mechanic teacher would call a "kludge job".
After you remove it you'll probably want to fill in all the holes, clean it good and at a minimum bomb on some primer and maybe you can find a can of faded red to match? Sometimes you can get two colors on either side of perfect and blend it in with light sprays. Maybe your truck is slated for a full resto. If so disregard the kludge repair and go straight to body and fender man.
