Road Trip !!!
Was wondering how fast I can go in 4wd and if I need to use it for say going thru the Sierras or Rockis in extreme conditions, also cables or chains needed ???
4X4 is ment to be used at a slower speed. (whatever your definition of slow is) I'm sure the manual has a certain speed recommended for highway/off road use of 4X4, I'm just too lazy to dig it out
Good luck on your road trip. I'm going on a mini-road trip at the start of December. CT to Maine. Can hardly wait !
Couple of things come to mind--you are basically driving a rear-wheel drive unit, that is comparitively light in the rear-end. If you are used to driving a front-wheel drive vehicle and start to skid, you need to let up on the gas. The V-10 has enough power that it will break loose in slippery conditions. As far as chains are concerned, if you have good tread on your tires, you should be good to go, unless you get off on some secondary roads that don't get as much attention from the snow plow drivers.
The Sierras and Rockies both can get some pretty bad snow storms this time of year. I assume that you will be using the interstates. Different states have different ways of plowing their roads--here in Utah they salt them pretty heavy, but in Wyoming they plow and sometimes sand. Best advice is if you get in a real bad blizzard, find a place to pull off and wait it out.
The four-wheel drive is good, and if you are in a blizzard, you will most likely be going slow enough so that the max four wheel drive speed won't be a factor.
Good luck on the road trip. Remember that the main objective is to keep the rubber side down.
