When I was a teenager, my dad was accusing me of using too much gas over the course of a month or so. I was driving his (now mine) 75 F250. I told him I was just going back and forth to school and work Well, come to find out the accel pump was spraying all over the engine. No wonder it smelled like gas so bad. Luckily he found it before it caught me on fire.
Since we are on the subject, Walmart/most auto parts stores/TSC/Safety Center/Lowe's has nice portable size fire extinguishers to carry in your vehicle. Now some fires are even to much for them, but you never know if it might of helped safe these. I feel sorry for all the folks (and some are FTE members) that had to experience this.
And get one for the house and shop/garage, it might of kept this from happening. Actually it was a wild fire that got the house and some of the truck. And the next one.
Extinguishers are great idea and should be required like a spare tire. Those are some very sad pictures. Just say no to long lengths of rubber fuel line. Dent sides had minimum of 4 rubber fuel hose connections, tank, cab/box, fuel pump and carb. Need to check them all. Shop will not fix a 10 year old tire around here. But be more than happy to sell you new set while you drive away with 45+year old rubber fuel lines. Just saying extinguisher should be required equipment on any vehicle with tags. DOT requirement on 26,001 lbs or over, why not every vehicle, like 4 way flashers.
Are you not free to ... carry ... or... not carry ...spare tires, fire extinguishers, self defense, cooler with iced tea, hat, shades, spare underwear, etc. If you feel a desire or need to, then do it ... but leave Govt. out of it.

Sorry did not intend it to be political/gov. posting should have said common sense, but that comes at a very high price anymore. Very sad pics of burned dents, I didn't know in my youth that windshield washer fluid would accelerate a fire or that antifreeze has a flash point and will burn, gas can boil in your tank if it gets hot enough at high elevations. Ford didn't know it either, that's where the not equipped for ambulance came from in the 80's. Time is the teacher if you didn't get it the first time around. Yes still clean underwear everyday in case I get run over and go to hospital
Definitely don’t need more rules. I have ALWAYS carried a small electrical/gas rated extinguisher in the truck. Also a quality new designed tourniquet, a large isreali bandage and a pair of rubber gloves.
Small extinguisher can put out or fight many small fires to buy time for the big boys to show up or to get everyone out. Tourniquets are great at stopping blood flow to extremities, and a Israeli bandage is a big like 6x6 inch non stick super absorbent pad that should have a powder in it to clot blood better. The bandage is for holes or cuts not able to be helped with the tourniquet.
With that stuff plus knowing how to do cpr, a untrained person can fight a small fire, stop large amounts of external bleeding and can clear air ways/keep someone breathing. Throw in a couple road flares to stop or direct traffic. Keep all this stuff in a bag you can reach from either side of the truck. Always get emergency services on the phone ASAP, and order bystanders to do things you need done.
DIRECT TRAFFIC! APPLY PRESSURE HERE! WATCH FOR FIRE! CALL 911! Give bystanders a job.
All this isn’t just for traffic accidents. You can cut yourself with a saw, stab yourself with something. I don’t need to explain how out of nowhere and suddenly a fire can happen. Or choking, you can choke on just about anything.
I believe in carrying a gun for self defense and personal protection. That’s for saving lives. Statistically youre MUCH more likely to save your own life or the lives of others through simple emergency medical attention and calling for help than you ever are to use a gun to defend a life.
I’ve had paramedic friends tell me sometimes the only thing you can do for someone is put a pillow or blanket over them or under them. Think hot summer sun or burning asphalt. A untrained uninsured person doesn’t need to run up and start cutting into people moving people that don’t need it or doing a bunch of crazy stuff they don’t know how to do. That’s a great way to get yourself or someone else hurt, or SUED! Yes sued for your attempt at good samaritaning! But the average person can usually fight the fire, assist with external bleeding, or perform cpr without opening yourself up to litigation.
