I hated that setup in an old 79 GMC I had about 30 years ago. Damn thing would hang up in between gears, ya hadta get out and pry the damned linkage back in place. What a PITA system. Give me an automatic any day, all day and twice on Sunday.

I had those same issues but in the later 60's with a '56 Ford 2 dr sedan I owned. Little did I know the linkage bushings would wear out and create all sorts of havoc especially when shifting out of second down to first. It wasn't until I wrestled with a Hurst floor shifter I understood what was "wrong" with my 3-tree set up.
Floor shifters were cool BUT 3-tree was better for those cold winter days when "getting busy" in the front seat wasn't impeded by that damn thing right in the middle.
