1993 f150 xlt 2wd extended cab short bed.
ac truck 5 liter.
I noticed the smog pump making noise, so i threw on a 94 inch belt and ran the belt per diagrams seen on this website.
The belt works fine once the vehicle gets going but squeals incredibly loudly upon initial startup.
Was wondering if any one has had this issue before.
Thanks fellas!
did you reverse your water pump direction? Smooth side of belt touches the water pump right? With the engine off, go push your power steering pulley back and pull it slightly, if its able to push back on trying, leave it there and try starting.
if you have to pull it, then try starting then. If still problematic, Id say youre looking at a tension issue, what does your tensioner show on the marks (there are marks that indicate where at in the "swing" of the tensioner it is at)
Also I would look at your pullies for pilling
which is the name for "debris" filling the pulley grooves, and your new belt may be riding against old material and thus not in the grooves properly, which woudl effect how well it spins esp at start up and etc.
Fan clutch, if its worn or you can move the fan blades back and forth like toward the radiator, then toward the engine(not rotationally) then it has wear and may be doing that but being it started after the belt I would think this isnt highly likely as much as other things
I checked everything you said, and noticed that the crank pulley has the belt off maybe by one groove. I tried to move it but it is stubborn and i didnt have enough time before work.
Ill get back to you once i get that groove alligned.
I did the same thing on my truck and followed the same routing as you did. Unfortunately for me, while there was no squeak initially, I get one during start up too. I haven't been able to track it down.
It is a pretty agressive squeal. Im thinking i need a bypass pulley. Ill be interested in knowing how others do not have the same squeal upon starting.
Tensioner was replaced 3 months ago and was not exhibiting a squeal before changing the belt routing. The only squeal that was there before the belt was rerouted was the smog pump itself, after i sprayed lube on the pump, the squak went away.
Belt slips visciously for the first few seconds on startup, then never squeals again until i crank it up again after turning it off.

sounds like your tensioner is at its limits possibly or your belt length is not right. Im only showing this pic because my pulleys had a Lot of belt material mashed into the grooves(I had a belt long ago that kinda... disintegrated.. it was gooey mess. ) and I spent a lot of time Using a stiff (Like welding kind) of wire brush into the grooves. I turned the engine over a tiny bit to get the crank pulley fully. How do your grooves look
Using your hand, take the longest length of belt, in the middle between alternator and crank pulley, push it down&left and up&right.
If it swings more than 1/2 inch, your belt is too long.
If it swings less than 1/2 inch, your belt is too short.
If your belt is too tight, you may have worn out your tensioner.
It is much cheaper and easier to get the by pass pulley, then use stock length belt, and everything is happy.
Now you might need another belt and another tensioner.
I think it is wise to go ahead and get the pulley bypass, does anyone have a link to one theyve used that works for my vehicle?
Im pretty sure the 940 is too small of a belt, and i will try the 945 mext, if that doesnt work ill put on a pulley.
i work at autozone, so im not concerned with $$, i can try out parts and not get into too much trouble.
