My 2001 f350 died on me like it was pole-axed & I had it towed to my house (4:00 am). It had started right up as always, then sounded like it was running out of gas and wouldn't start anymore. I replaced the fuel filter, charged up the batterys, & cleaned the air filter, but still no start. I have been reading lot's of posts on this site and know the problem sounds like the CPS, but the tach registers rpms when I crank over the engine. On all the posts I have scanned on this board (many!), I have only seen that when the CPS is bad, the tach doesn't read. Is this always the case? Black smoke comes out and it almost starts, but not quite. I plugged in the heater over night but it made no difference in starting.

sory to say sounds like you may have lost an inj o-ring or possibly an acuation solinoid but i would lean more towards the o-ring
one thing you could do to see if its an o-ring is disconnect the oil lines to each cyl. head one at a time cap them off and see if it will fire that way
