Charging system part 2
Hello all,
decided to start a new thread as last one was getting pretty long. But very much appreciate everyone’s input and help. I’m amazed at how much I’ve learned from you all!! Thank you
so I thought I was in the clear with the alternator. Figured out that it was putting out almost 2 bolts to the battery. But my battery keeps going dead. Did more research. Battery load tests ok. Alternator bench tests ok. I know many said upgrade to 3G but I thought I got lucky and was able to skirt that issue
so I charged up my battery, installed the + cable and left - off. Then connected a voltmeter across neg post on battery to the negative battery cable and saw it was pulling 2.38 amps. I pulled every fuse, one at a time….. no change. I replaced the firewall solenoid…. No change. Then I unplugged the alternator and the draw went away. I was able to further check and isolate to the yellow wire. Can anyone share any thoughts on this? Should that wire be pulling that much??? I assume that’s why my battery is always dead.
I do plan to upgrade to 3g and I know that whole section of wire comes out. Just wanting to know if what I’m seeing is normal. As always, thanks!!!
as a reminder, this is a 94 f150 that had an in-line 6, swapped to a 351w. The Windsor is an 89, so assume the alternator is an 89 2G alternator
Yellow wire in gray plug is my draw source

That’s a bad idea. What do you mean the thread is too long? JJF20’s rebuild thread is 59 pages with 880 posts. Now you have two threads about the same issue so people don’t know exactly has been discussed and what tests have been done.
Thoughts on the current draw going away with the key off when you unplug the alternator? Sure do. Reread the last paragraph post #38 in your other thread. It seems to me the diode is bad.
You don’t need to assume anything about which alternator is in the truck. They are completely different. The 2G has two connectors as shown in the second picture in post #1 (other thread) and an external fan. The 3G alternator connectors look look like this
and the cooling fan is internal.
