I noticed than on the upper trims (not sure about lower) of the Chevrolet/GMC, you do get a message in the DIC stating that the tailgate is open. On the ones with the multi-pro/flex, it says that inner tailgate is open as well. I, too, have a tonneau cover and don't see the tailgate with cover closed. Well, unless I use camera view and see the bumper!
I made my own. I bought the led light from NAPA and it included a nice grommet. Its in the factory location and I wired it to an upfitter switch. It comes in handy to illuminate my trailer ball hook up in the dark.
Disregard my post, I miss read what you were looking for.

Reason: misread
I’ve read somewhere on here in another thread you can use forscan to add a “tailgate adjar” message on the instrument cluster as long as you have the 8” cluster. F-150s have this so it’s simple to do.
Hit the camera button to see the rear view camera?
not a bad suggestion, but doesn’t work in motion. With the prevalence of truck tailgates opening on their own, this is a reasonable concern. I’m about to do the recon and see if I have the wiring necessary to add the tailgate ajar notification to the dash.
My 2022 Platinum has warning message if the tailgate opens when the truck is running but no message if the tailgate was left open and you start the truck.
Simple way would be an LED with a door contact switch at the tailgate. When closed, the circuit is open so the light is off. When open, circuit closes, LED comes on, letting you know the tailgate is open. You could get clever with a relay and make it so the system turns off with the ignition also.
