I think I've narrowed down a clutch problem I have to either the flywheel or pressure plate. What I'm curious about is what are the DMFW's made from? Is it two plates or two half circles held together? What would cause it to crap out? I'm getting a nasty chattering sound when I rev the engine and let it come back down to idle. I didn't realize how bad it was until a buddy of mine said something yesterday. While I was changing the fluids and filters today I checked it out a little more and you can almost feel the rattle around the bell housing on the tranny. Could this be my DMFW? I'm gonna be calling Mr Clutch in the next couple weeks to see about getting a Luk, but I don't have the money right now, so I need to know if this one is gonna cause any permanent damage or other problems.
I don't know what damage can happen but I drove my 97 PSD company truck with a bad dmfw for 600 miles before it was replaced. It only rattled at idle and low rpm.
That would be the dmfw. You can continue to drive it a little while without to much worry. I have never seen a dmfw completely fail and leave an owner stranded, however keep in mind the longer you leave it in you risk some main brg damage. The dmfw weighs in at 70lbs and are usually out of balance when they are worn out. I would suggest replacing as soon as you are able to avoid any real damage.
