So... I guess I should try out 10W30 next time (without my dad knowing, he doesn't have to know... heh...) Would the thinner oil give the engine any kind of more pep (considering the oil isn't as thick...)? Just curious... I'm assuming not much though, if any...
i have the same (VERY) loud tick in mine and the ford dealership here told me its the timming gears these v6s dont have chains only gears like a gear drive and that is causing all the noise. when new they have a nylone coating on the gears so the noise is very light but with age like any part they wear and then become metal to metal. i was told to replace the gears but at 70 dollars for the set plus gaskets and my time ill just let it go till the teeth ware off the gears.
Thanks to all of you who have added to this, a lot of good info here. 77monster, that is the first time i've heard that one about the timing gears. thank you i'll have to chech and see if that is some of the noise too. but mine stops and the engine is quite at time, still a puzzle to me. thannks again ladies and gents keep -em coming. ex...

2.8's have gear drive. 2.9's and 4.0's have a chain and gears.
10W30 is the factory recommended oil for the colunge V6's. The newer modular V8's and engines REQUIRE 5w30 or 20. The other oil causes oil pressure problems in the mod v8's especially.
I am running 20W50 in my 2.8, becuase it is so worn. otherwise, I'd be running 20W50 in it.
The 2.9's tick because they suffer from inadequate oiling to lifters. Rotating the thrust plate is said to increase oil flow to the lifters, and help the problem.
thanks pat67shorty , i like your avitar, i guess that is your ride. nice. i used to fool around with a lot of older fords , 49-68 trucks only. did the f100 nationals in tenn several times , lot of fun.
