oil Pressure

1989 E250 Club Wagon 351 + E40D 66000miles (I think it's original mileage without the odometer is turned)

Hello everyone and specialy to maples01, JWA, Annaleigh, Mike1, Conansky and all the old others animators here that I forgot here and I hope you won't hold it against me !

Good to see Greaser007 and BOOM-FIST back here with their super interesting project. It will encourage me to come back here to see it more closely

My Club Wagon is not so bad. The new camping season has just started and we left for 3 weeks and lived there during these 3 weeks. Impeccable, my wife and I love our Club Wagon.

We covered about 2000 miles with no problems during our trouble free trip. However on the way to back home, I noticed that my oil pressure dropped more than before. If I'm driving at 65 MPH on the highway, the needle may even drop just before the N of the word "NORMAL". If I lower the speed to 55 MPH my needle goes up a bit like here in the photo. 55 MPH is the speed i drive most of times. I change engine oil (15W40) every year or so every 4 or 5000 miles. I have to add about two pints between oil changes. But there to my surprise, I had to add 2 pints during our trip (2000 miles). I don't like it very much, uses more oil than usual and the oil pressure drops a lot.
What should I expect ?

Swap in a quality new or known good sender to compare. Temporarily hook up a mechanical gauge for a more precise measurement.

Hi Tabijan, you're a old contributor too. Thank for your advice. I'm going to catch a temporary oil gauge. Advice for quality gauges? links are welcome

Pretty hard to build a mechanical gauge incorrectly. Stewart Warner was regarded as a quality brand way back when.

Glorified idiot light, you may need to replace the sending unit, the only way to get accuracy is to install a mechanical unit, get the copper tube if you do, the plastic is easy to get burnt by engine heat, you can add a T fitting to keep the factory unit.
Now if it remains low, you could have a blockage in the oil passages, oil filter swap and flush it out, be careful with those thin the oil flush kits, they can and will damage bearings, you can try Lucas as it is not a thinner. FYI if it were really as low as the gauge indicates, the lifters would be rattling as they require pressure to pump up, without it they will not be tight enough for opening the valves.

Hello Maples 01

you think it's more a problem between the sending unit and the gauge. You reassure me a little, thank you. It is true that I did not hear any abnormal noise from my engine. Is this a known issue ?

Yeah, the lifters will rattle like crazy when the pressure is too low, try a new sending unit, they are cheap. I've had Dodges that ran 20 PSI and were quiet, just needed to keep an eye on the oil.

Before you guys start running lines that'll contain oil under pressure into the cabin strongly consider using a decent quality electronic gauge. I use top-of-the-line Auto Meter however the company Glow Shift has decent stuff as well.

Using an electronic gauges is vastly more safe as you don't have any fluid under pressure inside the cabin. Think of the mess if the line should rupture. I've seen this happen and would not want to risk it especially if there's a suitable alternative.

This is what I used in my 2005 E-350 with 5.4 engine: Auto Meter 3853 Here's the less expensive Glow Shift oil pressure gauges: Glow Shift OP Gauges

Hope this helps!

Never had an issue with copper, does that go on the factory sending unit, or does it require a different one?

Be that as it may taking steps to prevent the mess is still a good idea especially when the safer installation is so readily available.

Auto Meter and Glow Shift both use their own proprietary sending units, I don't believe the factory versions are compatible if they're the "glorified idiot light" types.

I'd like to have one, not sure where I can put it, mine reads almost maxed out, I do not believe it either, not being 30 years old, need to find a pillar pod I guess.

Does anyone have a picture of the oil pressure port? I changed my coolant temp sender last week but I cannot for the life of me see where the oil pressure sending unit is.
Do I need to take off the A/C compressor to gain access to this port?

I was getting confused because of this diagram:

I found some videos though and it appears its near the oil filter.
