Plastidip: Cheap or Viable

To start off, I'm against chrome. I despise chrome. My 2022 CCLB Lariat DRM has entirely too much chrome. As such, I've been looking into the ways to de-chrome the new beast

In looking at some of the aftermarket blacked out badges, they are expensive. I could afford them, but the reason that I can afford them is because I don't generally spend that kind of money on things that don't have any purpose. I looked at vinyl wrapping some of this stuff, but really concerned about the durability of vinyl on many of the parts I'm looking at doing (specifically grill and bumpers) due to the gravel roads I drive here in the middle of nowhere. Paint, also too expensive. That led me to looking into the plastidip method.

From the videos and sites I've been looking at, this looks like a really good option to me. Coat them well enough, it looks like they would have the durability and could possibly look fairly nice. If they get damaged, then peel them and re-do them as needed. Probably won't do my rims as I just can't see that holding up to the rock chips (rocks destroyed my rims on the old truck), so will probably spend the money to powder coat them, but everything else, this looks viable.

What's is y'alls opinion on plastidip'ing these components? Cheap and hillbilly or a viable method for de-chrome?

Definitely cheap and hillbilly, great for kids with honda's.

Powder coat, or proper paint job or factory black parts, anything else looks second rate.

I hear your cheapness!! I thought about going with the Black Appearance Package, and I just could not make myself spend the money just for looks, and it bothered me that the black stuff is probably cheaper or at least the same price for Ford to make, but they charge so much for it.
So I'll have a bunch of chrome, but since I can't see it from the seat, and it won't affect the way it drives, I'll just be sparkly.

It's both cheap and viable, it does work. They make some decent top coats for the stuff now that make it last much longer and hold up to washings better. That said, the harder top coats make it not peel off as nicely either... Vinyl, a good vinyl job, can hold up very well but it won't be cheap and it's not always a DIY friendly option. You say paint is too expensive, are you trying to color match or just black it out? Reason I ask is you can DIY rattle can it and top coat it with a 2 part clear and it will hold up very well for a very long time. That's by far your least expensive way through. There are companies that make color matched rattle cans based on your paint codes also. I've used them in the past with varying success, depends on how fussy you are.

I used plastidip on some expanded metal behind my grill and found it to be durable. My unreliable memory says >5 years and ~65K miles.

If you want to make parts look really good, scrape off the plastidip, and have those parts chromed. Now that looks great!

Cheap and a short term solution. It'll fade and become a pain In the *** to remove...

I grew up when chrome was king. A set of Keystone classic mag wheels was an indication of class and good breeding. Then, people started wearing their pants around their ankles, wore black tennis shoes, and the worst of all, wore black socks with shorts. We would have made endless fun of them in the 70's and 80's. Then, black rims. Hideous beyond all description, but Ford even offers a package to appeal to people's bad taste.
I can tolerate polished alloys, but chrome is the ultimate for me. I even had the factory smoke rims on my BMW M5 chromed

.

You're from my generation. More chrome please.
Old line from an Armor All (?) commercial "It ain't cool if your chrome don't shine. "

i honestly think I have just obtained chrome overload. It's like the pendulum swung too far in the chrome the world direction. I have no intention of blacking out my rims, but when I look at my truck, all I see is chrome.

Same thing with my bikes. Too much chrome. I ended up blacking everything but accent pieces ( rocker arms, lower forks) but de-chromed everything else. If the number of compliments I get on it before and after are any indication, doing so was for the best. Want the same for the truck.
