I don't track my DEF usage. My guess is that it's about 1 gallon per 1,000 miles. The 2017-2019 use a lot less DEF than the 2020+ models.
What walmart has 2.5 gallon jugs for $8 anymore???

Every walmart I've been to lately has the DEF jugs for $11+.

The walmart jugs used to be $7.88, and the big truck stops had it for $2.99 a gallon, and my sources had it for $2.19 a gallon, but that has been a LOOOOOOOONNNNNNGGGGG time back.

The SuperTech at Walmart is more expensive now, but I got three jugs for less than the current price that I just looked up. That stuff got expensive real quick. Thanks Uncle Joe!

My '20 F450 used much more DEF than my '17 F350 did, especially while towing.

More DEF and less EGR seems like a great combination.

I get around 400 miles per gallon of def. Fill up at truck stops is the best value.

I have 1,015 miles on this 22' and already put a 2.5 gallon jug in it last night to get the DEF gauge back near full. Not topped off. About 500 of the miles have been pulling a trailer though.
This is ridiculous. I need to see if there is somewhere that will sell a 225 gallon tote of this crap for a decent price. I don't travel near many truck stops to buy it at the pump.

You'd have to have a cool dark place to store the tote, and it would need to be used within two years or less depending on how it is stored.
UV light and heat shorten the life of DEF.

Probably wasn’t topped off to begin with, but towing does burn through it faster.

I tow 10k per year and go through 3-4 jugs. So let’s say 10 gallons to err on the side of way too much. I drive another 10k and go through another 2 jugs to err on the side of way too much. That’s 6 jugs a year.

They cost $16 at the dealership. That’s $96 a year. $8 a month. Oh boy. Buy it cheaper if you want.

A 225 gallon tote would last 15 years @20,000 miles a year, or 300,000 miles.

The truck was what appeared to be full when I left the dealership. Meter said full and 7000 mile DTE. So it had to have been close to the top anyways.
Yea that's true on it taking way too long to burn through that much DEF. Ill do like what was said above and carry my empty jugs with me and fill them when I do pass a station that sells it at the pump.
At my current rate, 10k miles a year putting a $16, 2.5 gallon jug in every 1k miles is $160. Which doesnt break the bank, just pisses me off I guess. It would be D3leted already if it wasn't for wanting to keep the warranty.
Rant over. Thanks for the info fellas!

Yeah I hear ya. Maybe my math was off, maybe $200 a year. I was thinking a gallon every 1,000 miles towing, but maybe that is generous. I was taken by surprise too. It’s definitely more for 2020+ trucks than before.

I think of it more like that DEF will reduce NOx and particulate matter by 90 percent – a significantly low emission level near zero. I can tell when I am standing next to a deleted diesel or older version that had no emissions equipment. I’m good with that. Some don’t believe in reducing emissions.

But I understand your frustration in for how fast the truck goes through it.

P.S. I feel the same way about a 34 gallon fuel tank. Can’t wait to add the 60 gallon replacement tank.
