meandering "O" ring.....

I have just replaced the fuel filters on my '04+ f350 DRW short box Crew Cab. Thanks to this Forum and U Tube all went well until I looked down into the upper filter housing. At the bottom of the housing a black "O" ring about the size of the diameter of a nickel was laying on the bottom. My new filter kit had 2 "O" rings, but they were for the caps. Is there supposed to be an "O" ring on the center "tower" (Fuel Filter Check Valve?) that is replaceable?

I have tried to get a schematic but to no avail.
