Z71 and FX4
#62
I know this thread is old and done but I must put my story in. I had a 1992 2wd ford ranger with the 4.0l and 8.8 OPEN rear end with 3.11s and a buddy of mine had a 1998 chevy z71 with the 5.7l. My truck sat higher, rode better, walked off and left his butt in a straight line, and with the right tires could keep up with him in the mud. Moral of the story, z71 is a joke. Just some extra numbers chevy folks can say to ford owners and have something to talk about when they are circle-jerkin at the gas station.

GMC Z71
Had a 3/4ton ‘10 Z71. Before that I had an’06 Dodge 4wd w/ LS. No comparison. Required much more throttle to get the Dodge to engage both rear wheels resulting in rooster tails/slippage of rear end etc. The GM would slip one wheel and immediately engage regardless of throttle. I much preferred the Eaton and despite more clearance , better Off-road tires and a more “truck like” appearance the Dodge would not do better.... I can’t speak to the toughness of either unit bc neither failed to do what they were supposed to. I drove plenty of slick clay roads in both but I know enough to know a 3/4+ ton rig isn’t for bogging....
