If your seeing coolent lose, your water pump could be going, and leaking, if you only get heat when you go it could mean that the water pump needs to be spun faster to circulate the coolent, are you experencing over heating when the its not moving? The water pump could seize up then you will have no coolent circulation, take a look at the water pump there are weep holes in it see if you see any coolent around it or coming out of them, also warm up the explorer and turn the heat on if its not comming out warm rev the engine a little and see if it will come out warm>
You are completely right, from cold the heater doesnt work hwen the engine is up to temp until you step on gas and get the revs over 2000 rpm. Also the temp gauge did go up a fair way until the coolent started to flow. When it starts to flow I could hear a series of bubbles and then heat came pouring out of the vents.
The car has a 2 year powertrain cover on it and so I will only have to pay the 1st 90 bucks to get the pump changed.
I had a look at the pump, I couldnt see any leaks from it, only from a rubber hose that has a metal junction in at the bottom of the engine (view from underneath) I dont know if it is this is leakin or if it is just where the coolent gathers to drip as it is loww down on the car.
Anyway I will investigate the pump job tomorrow, so thanks for your help.
