Autometer Street Tach Question

I have a 1967 F100, stock 352 with 3 speed column shift that I want to put a column mounted tach on. I just bought a used autometer that is quite old from a person I know who removed it from a 1967 Mustang he totally rewired. It worked fine in that car so I suspect it will be fine in my truck. I could buy a new tach, but I like the vintage of this one.

My question is this...
From research I have done most tachs have four wires: red/power, green/ignition, black/ground and white/dial light. The tach I have has 7 wires: red, green, black, 2 yellow and 2 light blue . The 2 yellow and the 2 blue are clipped short and not used previously. Since I generally don't drive this truck at night I am not worried about an illuminated dial. I plan to wire it with red to switched/fused power, green to negative on coil, and black to ground and I am pretty sure it will work, as it did in the Mustang. My question is, has anyone encountered a tach with 7 wires like the one I have, and what would the yellow and blue be used for? I have tried to remove the back to check which terminals the wires go to, but I seems stuck and I do not want to force it ab break anything. Thanks in advance for any info.

Well I slowly and carefully worked the back off the tach. It was glued on by someone, and it looked like it might have been Goodyear Pliobond adhesive-remember that stuff? Anyway this is what I found and have no idea what's going on with the 4 clipped wires. Tach works fine with the red, black and green wires and the dial is continuously lit when truck is running. And I like the look of it.

See if you can find a part number on it somewhere, then contact Autometer. If no number try sending the picture for ID purposes. They will likely be able to get you the info you need.

WHAT ARE THESE COLORED WIRES ON MY TACH FOR?

MAY 7, 2020
  • Red = key on power supply
  • Black = common chassis ground
  • White = dash lighting power
  • Yellow = used only on Internal Coil Magneto tachometers as the signal wire
  • Twin Black = (looks like a lamp cord) is used on External Coil Magneto tachometers that use an inductive pick up (#5210)
  • Green = tachometer signal for standard or electronic ignitions
  • Gray = for tachometers that use a Hi/Lo shift light. When grounded, Lo shift light point is active. When ungrounded, Hi shift light point is active.
  • Blue = used on Playback tachometers to start recording (see playback tachometer instructions)

This from Autometer site,

The blue and yellow wires may be selectable 'loops' that can be cut to select between a 4, 6, and 8 cylinder engines. Does it read the correct rpm, or is it off 3/4 or 1/2?

A pre DIP Switch tach? Could very well be. Based on idle the RPM seems in the ballpark, but I will check with my timing light RPM display when get the tach properly installed.
Thanks everyone for the replies. I think I will send the photo to Auto Meter to see what they have to say. They may even be able to tell me how old the tach is.

I sent an email with some questions and photos to Auto Meter about my tach. Within hours I received a reply stating that the tach was manufactured from the 70's through the 80's and that the clipped wires were for a V8 set up. The email included this image of the installation instructions for the various models of the Street Tach. A very impressive customer service response I must say.

Very good. At least it is set up for a V8. Put a piece of heat shrink on the 2 yellow and 2 blue ends and call it good.

I'm guessing here, but because it goes under the plate, and since it is a ground wire, is there some evidence that it would have been fastened to something on the metal tach housing?

This is my tach. Now in truck and away for winter.

I took the tach apart and checked all solider joints nothing is lose or broken, i still don't know where the black ground wire would connect, i don't see any indication

427 engine,
hmm?? you might try emailing Autometer. When I contacted them for help with my tach they were very helpful and sent me the wiring diagram.
Here is the mail address of the fella that sent me the diagram. Maybe he would know if you sent him your pictures and question.
His name was Doug. service@autometer.com
Good luck

When I looked more closely at your picture, there is a negative symbol stamped into one of the brass lugs.. I wonder if it was fastened there?

Good catch on the negative symbol!
I was thinking about those two "unused" solder blobs next to the one with the Yellow and Blue wires. Both look like they had something attached at some point, but they also could just look that way because sometimes solder does that!

I'm also in the "call Autometer" school of thought.

I tried calling them and emailing with the above email address along with the pictures, no one could help me, they told me the tach is 40 years and its time to buy a new one , one of the guys in tech support Jeff told me i was missing a black wire and a white wire lol. They were no help

you bring up a good valid point with the brass lug, is there any way when you get your truck out in spring / summer if you could see where the black wire hooks up on your tach?
