1988 F250 7.3L diesel. I am installing all new parts for the AC converting to R134a and have two questions:
1) Which orifice tube to use (Blue, Black, Red, Orange or Variable)?
2) The new condenser to evaporator hose has the quick release on the evaporator end. There was a plastic cap over the end that goes into the evaporator to keep dirt out and cover the orings. Clearly this gets removed but there is also a loose plastic ring under the temporary sealing cap. Does that plastic ring need to stay on the connector when it is installed into the evaporator?
Take that off too
It's there to hold the garter spring in place so it does not get lost during shipping
Those new ones with the 3 o rings should be way better
Nice
Thanks for the info on the connector end. I have an orifice tube from Carquest (T38635). When I look it up, it says Black in the description but in parenthesis is says OE Red. Say what!!!
Most of us in the 80 - 86 area just keep the same color valve and have not had any issues.
The only issues I have had are leaks!
All new parts but 1 hose & evap.
2 leaks were me but the others not me
I am tracking down I hope the last leak and hope to have nice cold AC again.

Well the fixed orifices came with a few different tube end sizes
Red, black yellow green and blue if I remember right
Fellow Ford boy buddy from Cal back in the day put red ones in everything
See what color autozone wants to hand you for your 88 F250
They will all work fine in my opinion
I have replaced everything in the system; evaporator, accumulator, expansion unit, and compressor. I am replacing the hoses also but two, the suction and discharge, that I got don't fit right so looking into returning them.
Any idea why the Carquest orifice tube (actually Murray 38635) says black but OE red?
No idea why theirs is black when they say oe is red but it will most likely work
It only makes a small difference in how fast the liquid freon shoots into the evaporator
It ought to freeze your *** out of there when you are done
Good on ya
