air pumps
anybody know anything about emission equipment that came on a 76 360 in a f-250? i went to get an e-test today and after passing no problem twice in the past,(same place) they tell me i'm missing the air pump. i dont see any brackets or place to mount one, and there's no place on the exhaust manifolds to hook up lines. i thought i'd better check here before i go to the state inspection station
I'm willing to bet your's is one that didn't come with air injection. Around here, after 25 years, you don't have to be emissions inspected, but it might still be visually inspected.
I'm in New York, and while no one usually does the "visual" test to make sure cats/egr/air pump exist, I'm pretty sure it's on the books that it's part of the overall emissions inspection.
There is also great confusion when it comes to pickup trucks. Just by having "passenger car" plates on the '01 (which means I HAVE to have a cap on the bed), I confused a bunch of inspectors around here because they said a truck this big is supposed to be commercial, and get just an idle check. Passenger cars are required to go on a dyno and be tested throughout the speed range, up to 60MPH. And then there is that fine line between a heavy-duty '70's F250 (highboy, with F350 chassis, like my '74) or a "normal" F250.
I've noticed inspectors (around here, they are general mechanics with the equipment and a license), are VERY touchy when they have been bitten once or twice.
A local guy here on Long Island got jumpy after he tried to help someone out. Before hooking it up to the machine and scanning the registration, he looked under the hood. It had a bunch of stuff disconnected, and should have been hooked up and failed for the visual part. He did the guy a good turn by not failing him, and then telling him to go somewhere else to get it fixed. Turns out it's a DEC officer and he gets written up for not failing for equipment.
That was 3 years ago. He still hasn't gotten it cleared up, and they won't tell him anything. So, in the meantime, he's on the straight and narrow and checks EVERYTHING...
in colorado where i am, anything post 74, has to be inspected. i got it cleared up after all. i went to another place on sunday(same company different location) and explained the situation to the manager. he quickly looked under the hood then told the kid doing the test "this thing never had an air pump, give him a sticker". commen sense at last! so i'm legal now. untill next year anyway. thanks for the reply's guys!
The other guy was probably skittish after being "stung" by the DEC (or whatever, in CO).
The trick is to have the correct GVWR on the registration, and then they (or the machine) figure it out right, at least with commercial registrations... my passenger reggie for my '01 F250 gave the guy fits...
Do you have an EGR?
