E250 gripping/binding/groaning when accelerating from a stop
I think I need to overhaul the rear brake calipers on my 2001 E250, but I wanted to run this by the Forum before I tear into it..
Sometimes as I start out from a complete stop I get a binding/gripping/groaning sound and feel from the rear of the van. It feels like the rear brakes are being applied, but I can't be 100% sure it's brakes. Once I start rolling, after a few seconds it disappears. It only comes on when accelerating away from a complete stop, and then not every time. I noticed it's more pronounced if I'm starting out on an uphill slope.
I jacked the van up and the rotors spin freely.. no binding or other odd sounds while on the jacks. Pads are good.. rotors are old and definitely used, but don't appear outright damaged or warped.
Is this a classic case of sticking caliper pistons? Or, could this thing possibly be coming from the differential gears? Something else?
Thank you JWA. After some additional reading, it sounds like the limited slip clutch packs are probably worn. Sounds like a doable DIY project to replace these.
