How do I post a question about my transmission

I am new to this forum and can't figure out how and where to ask a question about transmission noise. Can anyone help?

Transmission??

I took my 2016 F250 to the dealer and asked them to diagnose a clunk or tink sound that occurs when I place the truck in drive and reverse and sometimes while starting from a complete stop. The transmission mechanic said its not the transmission and the sound is nothing to be concerned about could be coming from the differential. A service could be performed for $350.00 but no guarantee it would would do any good. The truck has only 46000 miles on it. Both the transmission mechanic and service manager said if it were their truck they would not worry about it. Has anyone experienced this type of sound on your F250?

Welcome to the forum!

It sounds like it could be the driveshaft slip joint being in need of some fresh grease. The clunk/ting when first loaded from being put in gear (forward or reverse) and from a dead stop is from the tiny bit of play in the shaft slip joint, the correct grease there will smooth it out and should stop the noises. Its early and I’m not done my coffee yet, but I think the Ford grease for this is XG-8 or something like that, hopefully someone else will correct me if I’m off on that.

Sure, could be slip joint, u-joint(s), or ring and pinion backlash. The latter seems unlikely unless the rear end has problems or is setup incorrectly. I guess it could also be carrier bearing if so equipped

I agree greasing the slip joint is a great and easy place to start

Thank you for your reply. I think I'll start with greasing my slip joint. I'm surprised the Ford Mechanic did not mention this.

I hate to be a cynic, but they couldn't charge you very much for doing that... I gave up on my local Ford dealer for maintenance long ago because they were intent on nothing more than extracting as many portraits of Ben Franklin from my wallet at one time as possible.

That's a great, no nonsense write-up! Living up to your title I see! Thanks!
