Has anybody here cleaned off their engine? I was checking the oil the other day and was looking around the engine/compartment and was wondering if I could use a gentle spray from the hose to clean it off without causing harm to some of the components. Any thoughts?
I've used the pressure washer on mine - be careful and don't get the nozzle right on top of the sensors/plugs.
I start it up and let it run while I spray it.
I clean mine about once a year at the quarter car wash. I just don't get the tip of the wand really close to anything. Every once in a while I blow the dust out with an air gun and wipe the excess away. I keep it clean because I do most of the work on it. I even wipe out the drain tray after I change the oil filter.
I've heard of auto detailers spraying Armor All tire dressing all over engines. I've never done it though. I check the oil, ATF, coolant, etc. regularly in my 86 F250 and other classics. I don't generally lift the hood of my 2020 F150.

I recommend simple green, spray the compartment/area liberally and I use a HF engine cleaning gun that hooks to a compressor & is of course cheap....but it works well....I use a bucket of hot water to feed the gun and rinse the compartment. The gun has pinpoint like accuracy that almost eliminates any physical scrubbing and avoid saturating e-connectors/components. The most important item....do not use any solvent based engine cleaning product- the underhood e-boxes & harnesses can't take it.
The biggest concern is the connectors...... either wrap them in plastic or by hand wash/rinse... a trickle of water is ok but you definitely don't want to spray water
I use a nozzle sprayer attached to my water hose about once a year.
I've done this my whole life with no issues.
You might not want to eat off it, but it keeps everything looking respectable.
